Pop’s Whiskey Announcement

A whiskey story…  We at Premier Wine & Spirits recently secured a new client based in Philadelphia who contracted us to create his whiskey brand from scratch. Our company has been doing more and more brand building and sourcing for products within our industry and this is one of 4 brand builds Premier has done in the past two months alone.

This project was unique in the fact that our client had a very specific story he wanted to tell through the packaging and taste of the product. Jason (the brand owner) wanted to create an Irish whiskey that shared the story of his ancestors’ immigration from Ireland to the United States. He wanted this conveyed in not only the formulation but in the label design as well. So Jason and our CEO, Noah traveled to Ireland to visit one of the oldest and most acclaimed whiskey distilleries in the world, where they formulated the perfect blend to use for this project.  This distillery has created countless award winning formulas and it is a true honor to work with them.  The whiskey will originate in Ireland and be shipped to the US, where it will be aged in American bourbon barrels for the finishing touch. Just as his ancestors originated in Ireland and traveled to the US for opportunity, where their roots took hold to build a better life. So when I started to conceptualize the design, it needed to be just as customized to the story as the whiskey itself. Jason wanted to pay homage to his great grandfather Pop’s McCann by naming the brand after him, as well as featuring his likeness on the bottle itself.

Pop’s McCann

So with the name Pop’s Whiskey in mind, and a vintage photo of great grandfather McCann himself, the creative process begins.

We wanted a thick, weathered paper for the label to represent the “traveled” nature of the brand. I pulled together a list of elements that rang true to the story being told. An imprinted image of the historic coffin ships that Jason’s ancestors sailed on from Ireland to the US.

The fleur de lis in the background to represent their arrival to the southern NOLA port. Laser etched Gaelic Irish crosses representing their true Irish ancestry and “Jeff Cap” debossed on the top of the cap accompanied by the saying, “It’s Where I Hang My Hat”.

Jason could not have been more excited with the final product and we could not be more proud to tell his story by creating a brand that truly encompasses the past, present and future of his personal journey. Pop’s Irish Whiskey has become more than a product, but a true embodiment of one family’s voyage, conveyed through a whiskey story.

As the brand build comes to completion, Jason has informed us that he is so pleased with the process that he has invited our company Premier Wine & Spirits to become an equity partner in the brand. Which brings me to announce that Premier will now be part owner as well as representing Pop’s Irish Whiskey worldwide. The product is being launched in Pennsylvania as we speak, and we strongly recommend you pick a bottle up for yourself and give it a try. It is a truly unique brand with an equally remarkable story, as you now know.

On the road.

We are also currently in the process of 3 more brand builds for clients from all areas of the globe, and with such a focus on building brands for others, we will keep you in the loop on all the big announcements and product launches to come!  With our new partnerships and facility capabilities we have become a true one stop shop for any and all needs in the wine & spirits industry.  With everything that is going on it is hard to keep everyone up to date on things, but you can read all about our latest projects on our completely revamped website HERE.

The Gin Foundry Europa Wins On Both Coasts, Making This 7 In A Row

The Gin Foundry Europa London Dry Gin has been awarded a Silver Medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and a Silver Medal in the New York International Spirits Competition. This marks the 6th and 7th awards out of 7 competitions that Europa has entered in the last 9 months making it one of the most awarded gins of the year.

April 13th-15th celebrated the 18th San Francisco World Spirits Competition; it was founded in 2000 as a way to recognize exceptional products in the spirits industry. The 2018 Competition was the biggest in its history, featuring more than 2,200 entries and is considered to be the most influential spirits competition in the world. Medal winners represent some of the finest products from around the world. An SFWSC medal has become a recognized affirmation of high quality and one of the most reliable and universal indications of a spirit’s excellence. Products awarded a Silver medal are outstanding in their category. They show refinement, finesse, and complexity. They are among the best examples of their particular category.

The 9th New York International Spirits Competition was held in the heart of Manhattan April 22nd. Close to 600 spirits from around the world competed in a blind tasting judged by top spirits buyers from around the New York metropolitan area. The New York International Spirits Competition is one of the most respected international spirits competitions in the world as it is the only competition where all the judges are real trade buyers judging the liquid by its category and actual price!

The Gin Foundry Europa was previously awarded a Gold Medal by The World Gin Awards, a Silver Medal from Tastings.com and Bronze Medals from the American Distilling Institute, American Craft Spirits Association and the New York World Wine and Spirits Competition.

Upon winning two more awards, company founder Chris McClain said, “It is truly humbling to be recognized by our peers and industry experts for the hard work, passion and love that we put into Europa. We fully believed that we had created something special but to receive this much acknowledgement this early is something really special. We are already working on our next gin and hope to be able to share that with our fans later this year.”

The Gin Foundry Europa contains 10 carefully selected botanicals sourced from along the Mediterranean Trade Routes (Ingredients: Juniper: Macedonia, Coriander: Bulgaria, Angelica Root: Belgium, Orris Root: Morocco, Fennel Seeds: Turkey, Bitter Almond: Spain, Orange Peel: Spain, Lemon Peel: Spain, Basil: Egypt, Grapefruit: Turkey). The botanicals are steeped in pure grain spirit overnight and then expertly distilled in a traditional copper pot still in the United Kingdom. Before bottling we blend our spirit with pure Mountain Spring Water in Switzerland.

The Gin Foundry Wins Again And Again!

We are proud to announce The Gin Foundry was awarded a Silver Medal and a score of 89 from Tastings.com. Full review of Europa below.

The Gin Foundry Europa London Dry Gin has been awarded a Silver Medal by The Tastings.com International Review of Spirits and a score of 89 points on a scale of 100. Tastings.com review of Europa puts it in the “Highly Recommend” category for gins. This award comes directly on the heels of receiving a Gold Medal at the World Gin Awards last month in London. Europa also received a Bronze Medal last night at the American Craft Spirits Association Craft Spirits Awards in Pittsburgh. Medals winners at the ACSA awards were hand-selected among a pool of more than 500 entrants.

The Tastings.com International Review of Spirits is America’s oldest annual international spirits competition and has been operated objectively for 25 years. It is a blind tasting, medal-based competition that awards based on a 100-point scale. Upon hearing the news of another medal award, company founder Chris McClain said, “We are very excited that the work we put into creating Europa is being recognized by the leading critics in our industry. We had a very specific vision when we set out to create this brand and this product. We will continue to push forward in creating a series of gins that follow the historical Trade Routes to create distinctive Gins that embody the terroir from that region.”

Tastings.com review of Europa’s taste indicated, “Aromas and flavors of lemon-poppyseed scone, water lily, orange candies, and nut oil with a satiny, crisp, dry light-to-medium body and a warming, breezy finish. A solid citrus-forward gin.”

Actor Ryan Reynolds Acquires Aviation Gin

Actor Ryan Reynolds Acquires Aviation Gin, or a large stake in it at least.  Yesterday he and Aviation Gin both announced on their social media profiles that Ryan Reynolds “purchased” and now “owns” Aviation Gin.  This makes him the latest of many celebrities to cash in on the profit fueled wine & spirits industry that seems to be booming year after year.

And as you have probably heard, he’s not the only one recognizing the opportunity here.  Stars like Diddy, 50 Cent George Clooney, and more have all seized the chance to ride the wine & spirits wave.
Reynolds is apparently one of the first A List celebrities to invest in gin.  His reason for doing so?  “For one simple reason: It’s the best damn gin on the planet,” he told Forbes.

Reynolds goes on to say, “About a year ago, I tried Aviation for the first time. Since that day, I’ve spent my time finding some way to infiltrate the company”.

Aviation, a small producer based out of Portland, Oregon is bound to get more publicity now.  Aviation apparentluy sold 15,000 cases of gin in 2016, according to Beverage Marketing Corporation’s database. The brand is believed to have increased that amount to around 18,000 cases in 2017.

We wonder if Deadpool will have anything to say about this…  Deadpool 2 hits theaters this May.

Reynolds will also sit on Aviation’s board and serve as creative director for the brand.

A press release for the partnership directs press to contact Reynolds about the partnership at [email protected]  An automated email reply written by Reynolds himself is below:

Thank you for your email and interest in Aviation American Gin! I’m away from my desk at the moment but will respond the moment they give me a desk.

About a year ago, I tried Aviation for the first time. Since that day, I’ve spent my time finding some way to infiltrate the company. I did this for one simple reason: It’s the best damn gin on the planet. Period.

My responsibilities here at the company are vast. I’ll spend my days being photographed intermittently clinching my jaw muscles while pointing at things and nodding. I’ll drink Aviation Gin. I’ll sit in board meetings, imagining my very own Red Wedding.

I don’t know whose idea it was to allow me into the gin business, but I can assure you, there are smarter, more reasonable people in charge.

Thank you again for your email… If the matter is urgent, please contact my secretary, Bruce, who’ll respond the moment I get a secretary named, Bruce.

Bacardi Buys Patron at $5.1 Billion

Yes that is Billion with a “B”.  Bacardi buys Patron at $5.1 Billion.

The tequila category has been on fire.  First Diageo purchases Casamigos, then Pernod with control of Avión earlier this month.  Now the biggest move was saved for last.  This week Bacardi announced that it has agreed to acquire 100% of Patrón Spirits at $5.1 billion. This deal comes 10 years after Bacardi first took a 30% stake in Patrón.

Adding the Patrón lineup is a game-changer for Bacardi. This deal will make Bacardi the second-largest U.S. spirits marketer in retail sales terms at roughly $4.5 billion. Only Diageo, with U.S. retail sales approaching $9 billion in 2017, is larger.

(Contact Premier Wine & Spirits for a free consult to create your own brand HERE.)

Bacardi will now hold a dominant 70% share in the US tequila market. And despite an influx of competition in recent years, Patrón has continued to grow.

Patrón’s success in building the luxury Tequila category over the past 20 years has been so pronounced that it now faces a host of competitors eager to make their own mark. These days, most of the major contenders are owned by multinational spirits companies that, like Bacardi, have ample resources to bring to the fight.

In addition to Casamigos, which it acquired in a $700 million deal last summer that includes another $300 million in performance-based payouts, Diageo is active in luxury Tequila with the Don Julio brand. Don Julio is now above 500,000 cases, and Casamigos is estimated at 175,000 cases for 2017. Meanwhile, Brown-Forman has been carving out strong growth with its Herradura brand, which sold around 180,000 cases last year, and Pernod Ricard is angling for a bigger piece of the action with Avión (about 125,000 cases), in which it acquired full ownership last week after taking a majority stake in 2014.

Bacardi’s blueprint to achieve full control of Patrón could potentially be repeated with a number of other promising brands in which it now owns minority stakes. In 2014, Bacardi took a minority interest in Compass Box Scotch whisky, and last year it followed with minority stakes in Teeling Irish whiskey and Ilegal mezcal.

50 Cent Sells Shares Of Effen Vodka

Another mainstream celebrity rap artist has cashed out on the thriving spirits industry.  50 Cent is supposedly officially out of the liquor game for the time being, now that word is spreading that he has sold his minority stake in Effen Vodka.

111111effen_3dbottles

50 Cent has been growing even more in popularity as his Starz series Power continues to grow as well.  With his name being mentioned so much lately, some started to wonder why he was no longer openly promoting Effen Vodka in interviews and on social media.

According to Angela Yee at the Breakfast Club, 50 Cent not only sold his minority stake, but ended his contract as Effen Vodka’s frontman.  Apparently 50 Cent received $60 million for the buyout, from what we hear.

111111Effen-Football-Vodka-50-Cent

However this does not necessarily mean that 50 Cent is out of the spirits game for good.  He’s had a taste of how profitable it can be to own a vodka brand, and recently he hinted that he may be getting into the cognac arena after a trip to France.  We will soon see.

Diageo Buys Casamigos for $1 BILLION

Another precedent setting brand acquisition has taken place in the spirits industry just this week.  Beverage giant Diageo will be purchasing Casamigos Tequila for a whopping $1 billion.  They have agreed to initially pay $700m for up front and then pay a further $300m contingent on Casamigos performing well over the next decade.  Now if that doesn’t spark your interest in creating your own spirits brand, I don’t know what will.  The alcoholic beverage industry is on fire right now and the opportunity to create impressive new brands is here.

1111Casamigos-2

(L-R) Mike Meldman, George Clooney and Rande Gerber (Casamigos Founders)

We should expect to hear more about this transaction throughout 2017 and you can be sure that you will be hearing more about the Casamigos brand soon.

Diageo now holds 4 Tequila brands in their spirits portfolio.  Don Julio, DeLeón, Peligroso and of course the newly acquired, Casamigos.  Large companies like Diageo are constantly on the lookout for attractive new brands with big potential to add to their growing portfolios.

Diageo will undoubtedly boast massive growth and sales for the Casamigos brand, focusing on expanding brand presence in all US and international markets.  Tequila is hot right now and Casamigos is in the right place at the right time.

Ivan Menezes, CEO of Diageo, is pleased to be working further with George Clooney and the Casamigos brand I am sure.

Casamigos was founded in 2013 by actor George Clooney, Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman. In 2016 the brand sold over 120,000 cases and it should be on track to sell at least 170,000 cases by the end of 2017.

18-01-NUVO-Magazine-Spring-2015-fyi_page_4_image_0002

George Clooney and the other founders will remain involved in the brand’s growth despite the brand buyout, which of course is smart considering George Clooney’s popularity as an actor and social public figure.
