Actor Ryan Reynolds Acquires Aviation Gin

Actor Ryan Reynolds Acquires Aviation Gin, or a large stake in it at least.  Yesterday he and Aviation Gin both announced on their social media profiles that Ryan Reynolds “purchased” and now “owns” Aviation Gin.  This makes him the latest of many celebrities to cash in on the profit fueled wine & spirits industry that seems to be booming year after year.

And as you have probably heard, he’s not the only one recognizing the opportunity here.  Stars like Diddy, 50 Cent George Clooney, and more have all seized the chance to ride the wine & spirits wave.
Reynolds is apparently one of the first A List celebrities to invest in gin.  His reason for doing so?  “For one simple reason: It’s the best damn gin on the planet,” he told Forbes.

Reynolds goes on to say, “About a year ago, I tried Aviation for the first time. Since that day, I’ve spent my time finding some way to infiltrate the company”.

Aviation, a small producer based out of Portland, Oregon is bound to get more publicity now.  Aviation apparentluy sold 15,000 cases of gin in 2016, according to Beverage Marketing Corporation’s database. The brand is believed to have increased that amount to around 18,000 cases in 2017.

We wonder if Deadpool will have anything to say about this…  Deadpool 2 hits theaters this May.

Reynolds will also sit on Aviation’s board and serve as creative director for the brand.

Bacardi Buys Patron at $5.1 Billion

Yes that is Billion with a “B”.  Bacardi buys Patron at $5.1 Billion.

The tequila category has been on fire.  First Diageo purchases Casamigos, then Pernod with control of Avión earlier this month.  Now the biggest move was saved for last.  This week Bacardi announced that it has agreed to acquire 100% of Patrón Spirits at $5.1 billion. This deal comes 10 years after Bacardi first took a 30% stake in Patrón.

Adding the Patrón lineup is a game-changer for Bacardi. This deal will make Bacardi the second-largest U.S. spirits marketer in retail sales terms at roughly $4.5 billion. Only Diageo, with U.S. retail sales approaching $9 billion in 2017, is larger.

Bacardi will now hold a dominant 70% share in the US tequila market. And despite an influx of competition in recent years, Patrón has continued to grow.

Patrón’s success in building the luxury Tequila category over the past 20 years has been so pronounced that it now faces a host of competitors eager to make their own mark. These days, most of the major contenders are owned by multinational spirits companies that, like Bacardi, have ample resources to bring to the fight.

In addition to Casamigos, which it acquired in a $700 million deal last summer that includes another $300 million in performance-based payouts, Diageo is active in luxury Tequila with the Don Julio brand. Don Julio is now above 500,000 cases, and Casamigos is estimated at 175,000 cases for 2017. Meanwhile, Brown-Forman has been carving out strong growth with its Herradura brand, which sold around 180,000 cases last year, and Pernod Ricard is angling for a bigger piece of the action with Avión (about 125,000 cases), in which it acquired full ownership last week after taking a majority stake in 2014.

Bacardi’s blueprint to achieve full control of Patrón could potentially be repeated with a number of other promising brands in which it now owns minority stakes. In 2014, Bacardi took a minority interest in Compass Box Scotch whisky, and last year it followed with minority stakes in Teeling Irish whiskey and Ilegal mezcal.

50 Cent Sells Shares Of Effen Vodka

Another mainstream celebrity rap artist has cashed out on the thriving spirits industry.  50 Cent is supposedly officially out of the liquor game for the time being, now that word is spreading that he has sold his minority stake in Effen Vodka.

50 Cent has been growing even more in popularity as his Starz series Power continues to grow as well.  With his name being mentioned so much lately, some started to wonder why he was no longer openly promoting Effen Vodka in interviews and on social media.

According to Angela Yee at the Breakfast Club, 50 Cent not only sold his minority stake, but ended his contract as Effen Vodka’s frontman.  Apparently 50 Cent received $60 million for the buyout, from what we hear.

However this does not necessarily mean that 50 Cent is out of the spirits game for good.  He’s had a taste of how profitable it can be to own a vodka brand, and recently he hinted that he may be getting into the cognac arena after a trip to France.  We will soon see.

Diageo Buys Casamigos for $1 BILLION

Another precedent setting brand acquisition has taken place in the spirits industry just this week.  Beverage giant Diageo will be purchasing Casamigos Tequila for a whopping $1 billion.  They have agreed to initially pay $700m for up front and then pay a further $300m contingent on Casamigos performing well over the next decade.  Now if that doesn’t spark your interest in creating your own spirits brand, I don’t know what will.  The alcoholic beverage industry is on fire right now and the opportunity to create impressive new brands is here.

Diageo now holds 4 Tequila brands in their spirits portfolio.  Don Julio, DeLeón, Peligroso and of course the newly acquired, Casamigos.  Large companies like Diageo are constantly on the lookout for attractive new brands with big potential to add to their growing portfolios.
